Perioral Ageing

What is it?

Perioral ageing refers to the changes that occur in the area around the mouth over time. As we age, the skin loses elasticity, collagen production decreases and the underlying fat pads may shrink. These factors contribute to the formation of wrinkles, loss of volume and sagging of the skin around the lips and mouth.

Common signs of perioral ageing

  1. Wrinkles and fine lines: Perioral wrinkles, often called "smoker's lines" or "lipstick lines", are vertical lines that develop around the lips. They can become more pronounced with age and with repetitive movements, such as puckering the lips or smoking.
  2. Loss of volume: As collagen and fat decrease, the lips and the area between the nose and upper lip (philtral columns) can lose volume and appear thinner. This can contribute to a more aged and less vibrant appearance.
  3. Sagging skin: Loss of skin elasticity can lead to sagging or drooping skin around the mouth, creating the appearance of jowls or marionette lines.

Treatment

There are several treatment options available to treat perioral aging and restore a younger, refreshed appearance. These options can be categorised into two main approaches:

1. Facial aesthetic medicine

  • Botox: Botox injections can be used to temporarily relax the muscles around the mouth, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Fillers: Dermal fillers can restore volume to the lips, philtral columns and surrounding areas. They can help create a more defined lip contour and treat deep wrinkles and folds.
  • Lines: Thread lifting involves placing dissolvable sutures under the skin to lift and tighten sagging tissues around the mouth. This non-surgical procedure can provide subtle rejuvenation and stimulate collagen production.

2. Facial plastic surgery

  • Lifting: A lip lift is a surgical procedure that treats excess skin between the upper lip and nose (philtral area). It lifts the upper lip, creating a more youthful and defined lip shape. A lip lift can be performed in combination with other procedures or as a stand-alone surgery.
