Dental Rehabilitation

What is it?

Dental rehabilitation refers to the process of restoring the form, function and appearance of damaged teeth. When teeth suffer from extensive decay, fractures or other types of damage, it is essential to rehabilitate them to prevent further complications and maintain a healthy oral environment.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are custom-made restorations that cover the entire visible part of a damaged tooth. Crowns are typically used when a tooth has suffered significant decay, trauma or root canal treatment and the remaining tooth structure cannot support a filling or other restorative options.

The process of placing a dental crown involves the following steps:

  1. Assessment and treatment planning: Our specialised dentist will carry out a thorough examination of your teeth, including x-rays if necessary, to assess the extent of the damage and determine whether a dental crown is the most suitable treatment option for your specific case.
  2. Tooth preparation: The tooth that will receive the crown will be prepared by removing any damaged or decayed parts, ensuring a stable base for the crown. The dentist will shape the tooth to accommodate the crown and, if necessary, impressions will be taken of the prepared tooth to create a customised crown.
  3. Placement of provisional crown: While your permanent crown is being fabricated in a dental laboratory, a temporary crown will be placed to protect the prepared tooth and maintain aesthetics and function.
  4. Permanent crown placement: When your customised crown is ready, it will be carefully placed and bonded to the prepared tooth using dental cement. Our team will ensure that the crown fits comfortably, provides a natural appearance and aligns correctly with your bite.
  5. Post-treatment care: We will provide you with instructions on how to care for your new dental crown, including proper oral hygiene practices and regular dental check-ups to ensure its longevity and optimal function.

Overlays and inlays

Overlays and inlays are restorative options used when a tooth has moderate to severe damage or decay that goes beyond what a traditional filling can address. These restorations are typically made of porcelain, composite resin or gold and are custom fabricated to fit the prepared tooth structure exactly.

The process of placing overlays and inslays is similar to that of dental crowns, involving preparing the tooth, making moulds and placing temporary restorations. Once the customised overlays or inlays are ready, they are bonded to the prepared tooth, restoring its form, function and strength.

Spike and false stump restorations

Abutment and core restorations are used when a tooth has undergone root canal treatment or suffered significant structural loss. These restorations provide support and stability for a dental crown by reinforcing the tooth's centre structure.

The process of placing an abutment and core restoration involves the following steps:

  1. Tooth assessment and preparation: Our dentist will assess the condition of the tooth and determine the need for an abutment and core restoration. The remaining tooth structure will be prepared to accommodate the abutment.
  2. Placement of the abutment: An abutment, typically made of metal or fibre material, is inserted into the root canal space to provide support and stability for the subsequent core restoration.
  3. Core restoration: A core material, such as composite resin or another suitable material, is built around the abutment to recreate the natural shape of the tooth and provide a base for the placement of a dental crown.
  4. Placing the crown: Once the abutment and core restoration is complete, a dental crown is placed on the prepared tooth to restore its aesthetics, function and strength.
