Devitalisation

What is it?

Root canal treatment or root canalisation, also known as endodontic therapy, is a specialised dental procedure designed to remove infected or damaged dental pulp and restore the health and function of the tooth.

Treatment

Treatment involves the following steps:

  1. Assessment and diagnosis: Our experienced dentist will carefully examine your tooth and carry out diagnostic tests, which may include x-rays, to assess the extent of damage to the pulp and determine whether root canal treatment is required.
  2. Local anaesthesia: Before the procedure begins, we will ensure your comfort by administering local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding area. This helps to alleviate any potential discomfort during treatment.
  3. Pulp access and removal: Our dentist will create a small access opening in the affected tooth to gain access to the pulp chamber. Using specialised instruments, infected or necrotic pulp tissue is carefully removed from the root canals of the tooth.
  4. Cleaning and modelling: Once the pulp has been removed, the root canals are carefully cleaned and shaped to create space for the filling material. This step ensures complete elimination of bacteria and infected tissue.
  5. Filling and sealing: The cleaned and shaped root canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This rubber-like material seals the canals and prevents re-infection. In some cases, a temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth between appointments.
  6. Restoration: After the root canal treatment, our dentist will discuss the best option to restore the functionality and aesthetics of the tooth. Depending on the extent of the damage, a dental crown, inlay, onlay or filling may be recommended to strengthen and protect the treated tooth.
  7. Follow-up care: We will provide you with detailed instructions on post-treatment care, including oral hygiene practices and any necessary medication. It is important to have regular check-ups to monitor the success of the treatment and maintain the long-term health of your tooth.
