What are they?

Oral mucosal lesions are changes that occur in the tissues lining the oral cavity. They can take many forms, including ulcers, white or red patches, nodules or sores. Common causes of oral mucosal lesions include trauma, infection, autoimmune diseases and irritants such as tobacco or alcohol.

Potentially malignant oral lesions

Certain lesions of the oral mucosa have the potential to develop into malignant conditions, such as the oral cancer. It is crucial to identify these lesions early and provide appropriate treatment to prevent their progression. Potentially malignant lesions may have features such as persistent changes in colour, shape or texture, non-healing ulcers or abnormal growth patterns.

Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis of oral mucosal lesions and potentially malignant lesions is essential to determine appropriate treatment plans. Several diagnostic tools and techniques are available, including:

  1. Contact endoscopy: Contact endoscopy, also associated with vital staining or fluorescence staining of tissues, involves applying a dye or contrast agent to the oral mucosa. This technique helps to visualise subtle changes in tissues and identify potentially malignant areas for further evaluation.
  2. Incisional biopsy: An incisional biopsy is a surgical procedure in which a small piece of tissue is removed from the lesion for laboratory analysis. This procedure helps to determine the nature of the lesion, namely whether it is benign, premalignant or malignant. It provides important information for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Treatment

Treatment options for oral mucosal lesions depend on several factors, including the type, size, location and nature of the lesion. Some common treatment approaches include:

  1. Excision: Excision involves the complete surgical removal of the lesion and a margin of healthy tissue around it. This approach is often used for small, localised lesions and provides diagnostic and therapeutic benefits.
  2. Topical medicines: In some cases, topical medications may be prescribed to treat specific lesions of the oral mucosa. These medications can help reduce inflammation, promote healing, or treat underlying causes such as viral or fungal infections.

 

In situations where the lesions are confirmed to be malignant, or have progressed to oral cancer, you will be immediately referred to a referral cancer hospital.
