Periodontal Disease

What is it?

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is a progressive condition caused by the build-up of bacteria and plaque on the teeth and gums. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to inflammation, gum recession, bone loss, tooth mobility and eventually tooth loss.

The two main stages of gum disease are:

  1. Gingivitis: This is the early stage of gum disease, characterised by red, swollen gums that can bleed easily when brushing or flossing. Gingivitis is reversible with proper treatment and improved oral hygiene practices.
  2. Periodontitis: If gingivitis is not treated, it can develop into periodontitis. At this stage, the infection spreads below the gum line, causing destruction of the supporting tissues and bone around the teeth. Periodontitis requires immediate intervention to prevent further damage and restore gum health.

Non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease: Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root straightening, also known as deep cleaning, is a non-surgical procedure performed to treat gum disease and promote gum health. This procedure involves two main steps:

  1. Destartarisation: Our dental professionals use specialised instruments to gently remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth and below the gum line. This thorough cleaning helps eliminate the source of infection and inflammation.
  2. Root planing: After scaling, the roots of the teeth are smoothed and polished to remove any rough areas. This process makes it easier for the gums to bond to the tooth surfaces, promotes healing and reduces the risk of future plaque build-up.

Scaling and root planing are usually performed under local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the extent of your gum disease, several appointments may be required for a complete treatment.

Periodontal surgery: When advanced treatment is needed

In more severe cases of gum disease, periodontal surgery may be required to effectively treat and manage the disease. Our experienced periodontal surgeons specialise in a variety of surgical techniques aimed at:

  1. Bag reduction surgery: This procedure involves accessing the gum tissue and bone to remove bacteria, reduce the depth of pockets and facilitate gum reattachment. It helps eliminate the source of infection and promotes gum healing.
  2. Soft tissue grafting: In cases where gum tissue has receded, our periodontal surgeons can perform soft tissue grafts to cover exposed tooth roots and improve the aesthetics and stability of the gums.
  3. Bone grafting: When significant bone loss occurs due to gum disease, bone grafting procedures can help regenerate and rebuild lost bone tissue, providing a stable foundation for teeth.
  4. Guided tissue regeneration: This technique involves the placement of special membranes or regenerative materials to encourage the growth of new bone and gum tissue in areas affected by periodontal disease.

Our periodontal surgeons will thoroughly assess your condition and recommend the most appropriate surgical approach to meet your specific needs.
